Presentation of the association

Our history, our art and our philosophy

Creation of the association

GAGSchola, short for Gebennensis Artium Gladiatorium Schola, is an association founded in 2009 by history buffs from the University of Geneva.
Their aim, which remains ours today, was to create an open, participatory structure dedicated to the study and practice of European historical martial arts, or AMHE.
Today, we continue to perpetuate this inclusive vision of HMEA, where knowledge is not the prerogative of one, but of all!

AMHE

Historical European martial arts, or HEMA, is a broad spectrum of martial practices of European origin whose transmission through time has been interrupted.
The modern practice of HEMA consists in reconstructing martial gestures from historical textual and iconographic sources.
These sources are transcribed, translated and then interpreted using an approach akin to experimental archaeology, with the ultimate aim of seeking to understand how people once fought in different contexts, using a variety of weapons and techniques.

Philosophy

Our approach to AMHE is as participative and inclusive as possible: everyone is invited to contribute to the study of sources, to propose and discuss the interpretation of techniques, or to lead training sessions, according to their motivation and abilities.
We pursue a horizontal approach, encouraging personal involvement and constructive discussion between peers: no hierarchy, rank or title entitling one to any privilege.
